La Mongie: skiing in the southwest of France

Freeride adventures in the Pyrenees

The ski resorts of La Mongie and Barèges make up the Grand Tourmalet Pic du Midi ski area. In the southwest of France, 100 kilometres of ski runs await. Various lifts comfortably take you up to an elevation of 2,500 metres above sea level.

The merger of the two resorts makes the Grand Tourmalet Pic du Midi – La Mongie/Barèges ski area one of the largest ski areas in the Pyrenees. From La Mongie, you can take the cable car to the top of Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,877 metres). From the observatory, you’ll enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the Pyrenees.

By the way: From Pic du Midi, several freeride slopes lead daredevils down into the valley. The area is known for being a true winter sports eldorado for freeride skiers and snowboarders. In the INTERSPORT Rent shops on site, you can get the perfect equipment for the breathtakingly beautiful descents.

Our RENTertainers recommend

A journey to the stars: That's what it feels like to visit the observatory at the top of Pic du Midi. The 19th century observatory can be reached by cable car from Bagnères de Bigorre via La Mongie. From the top of the mountain, you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the entire Pyrenees mountain range.

A 3,300 square dark-sky reserve has been created around the observatory. It restricts artificial light pollution and thus ensures you’ll get to see the stars. What’s more, you can also spend the night up there – the observatory accommodates up to 27 people.
